The Context

Delft Market is a vibrant weekly destination in the heart of the city, transforming every Thursday into a lively social hub. With flower stalls, cheese vendors, fresh stroopwafels, antiques, books, and toys, the market offers much more than fresh produce. It’s the passionate vendors—who start their day at 4 AM—creating a welcoming atmosphere, building trust, and sharing valuable insights about their goods. Unfortunately, some visitors exhibit rude behavior, which can affect the experience for both vendors and customers alike.

Research

Research Activity involved immersing in the context through Observation, Role Playing Activity, Interviews, and Booklet. The research was majorly based on studying the context and talking to real users. Through these activities, useful insights were gained to formulate a research question and goal for the project.

Key Insights

Key Insights

Vendors endure long, repetitive days and often feel underappreciated. The work can become monotonous, leaving little room for engagement or excitement.

Research Question

How might we facilitate meaningful interactions between vendors and customers in a busy market environment?

This project aims to foster a more positive and meaningful connection between customers and vendors, ensuring that vendors feel valued and appreciated for their tireless efforts through these five interaction qualities:

Ideation

Based on the identified interaction qualities, ideas were developed and refined into concrete concepts. These concepts were rapidly prototyped and tested in real-world contexts. During testing, customers were engaged to share their experiences and provide feedback on whether the prototypes effectively conveyed the intended interaction qualities.

Concept Evaluation

Based on the identified interaction qualities, ideas were developed and refined into concrete concepts. These concepts were rapidly prototyped and tested in real-world contexts. During testing, customers were engaged to share their experiences and provide feedback on whether the prototypes effectively conveyed the intended interaction qualities.

Concept Development

Following the concept evaluation, Concept 01 was selected for further development. Customer feedback was integrated, with the addition of visual and sound cues for enhanced interaction.

Prototype Building

For the prototype, a styrofoam material was chosen along with a spring (for hand 1) and wooden stick (for hand 2) as a structural support. LED lights covered the hand 2 and arduino set up was installed on the back of the hand along with accelerometer to detect the force of the hand 1. The circuit was looped with the help of Digital to Analogue Convertor and connected with a power bank. and began engaging in conversations with the vendors.

Prototype Testing

After developing the prototype, it was placed in the market for customer testing. Visitors found it playful, fun, and highly interactive. Without any instructions, they instinctively tapped the device and began engaging in conversations with the vendors.

The testing was successful with a few suggestions from the customers and vendors that were incorporated into the final concept. A different material was explored for the final prototype as the high-five hand made of foam broke due to constant hitting at the context.
